CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Back inside the ballroom, I tried to keep to myself, but eventually, someone heard who I was. Once my name was out, the number of people who approached me became exhausting. Sofia held court every once in a while, as was expected of her. I usually enjoyed the parties, but tonight, I was exhausted and worried about what would become of the Marco rings.

Thankfully, I wasn’t the only person drawing a crowd. Lukka was as well. As a prince of the Fae Seas and one of the linebackers on the paranormal football team, he’d gathered some publicity in the society blogs, one of those blogs being run by Bree. As she and Kristof mingled, I knew she was gathering information.

Women flocked to Lukka, and I watched a little fan club form around him, which wasn’t much different than the one he had back in Colt Valley. Asher stayed close to me, acting more like a guard than anything else. Our relationship was still undetermined, and I didn’t know what to do, but every now and then, we shared a warm look that comforted me more than anything else.

Felix was also stopped. The Crassuses were high society, and everyone wanted to be close to his family. I noticed that as he spoke, he kept a controlling hand on Sofia’s upper arm. More than once, I caught Sofia’s helpless expression, and she’d mouth, “Save me,” dramatically.

Then she’d laugh, and I’d know she was fine for the time being.

I watched the elevators open and smiled as I caught sight of Lorena’s father. Uncle Frank Quinn caught my gaze and headed directly in my direction. He looked powerful in his suit. His steps were confident, and his smile was kind.

When he reached me, he hugged me tightly. I wrapped my arms around his firm middle and soaked in his woodsy cologne and warmth before I pulled away. I’d never told Lorena this, but I knew her dad before I met her.

Uncle Frank had found his sister, my mother, a few months before he found out Lorena was pregnant. Uncle Frank had been worried about his and Lorena’s relationship. He talked about Lorena’s anger and knew an auramancer might be able to help her break from it.

He’d blamed himself for her brokenness. He’d stolen Lorena from Flower to protect her but had never given her any signs that he loved her. For a long time, he hadn’t been sure he was capable of love because Flower had used magic to possess his mind into loving her.

Everything was a mess, so Frank had run to his sister for help. My mom hadn’t been sure a relationship with Lorena was a good idea since she knew she was dying, but when they found out Lorena was pregnant, my mother uprooted our lives and decided to be her OB-GYN. The added bonus would be the fact that I’d have family after my mother died.

Meeting Lorena had been a shock. She’d been everything Frank had claimed her to be—angry, untrusting—but also a very good person.
